Apple had already announced that it had bought Shazam last December for a secret sum (rumours are of 400 million dollars, or 340 million euros).

However, this acquisition had so far been suspended until the European Union could investigate the agreement. The purpose was to determine whether the organization should oppose this integration, in order to avoid too much economic concentration by Apple in the online music sector.

Brussels finally gave its approval at the beginning of the month, so Shazam officially belongs to Apple, nine months after the sale. The company has therefore announced that ads will be removed from Shazam for all s, “so that everyone can enjoy the best of Shazam without interruption”. However, it has not given a precise date for the moment.

It must be said that the European Union had reason to be reluctant to see an application of this importance into the hands of a giant like Apple. Where the company claims 30 million Apple Music s, Shazam has one billion s worldwide and up to 20 million uses per day.

It is easy to imagine the added value that the new Apple’s application will be able to bring the old. Once integrated, its features will bring a real plus to Apple Music s, since they could quickly have direct access to iTunes once the song played on Shazam is recognized.

This technology could allow Apple to become more competitive with competitors in audio streaming, such as Deezer and Spotify. On the other hand, Le Parisien relies on the fact that this purchase also reveals a loss of speed, and value, of the musical recognition application.

Indeed, at the time of its last funding round, Shazam was estimated at more than $1 billion. According to the newspaper, Apple would not have liked to make any comments despite AFP’s questioning on this subject.
